Halloween is a time for tricks, treats and lots of creativity. While the candy bowls might get most of the attention, we think this spooky season is the perfect chance to shine a light on snacks that help our bodies feel strong and energized. This year, why not turn your family’s favorite fruits and veggies into costumes that are both fun to make and snack-tacular to wear?
Go Bananas
Start with a yellow shirt and pants or leggings. To make the top “peel,” cut a large piece of yellow poster board or felt into long oval shapes, then tape or pin them around the shoulders so they fan outward. For the stem, cut a strip of brown paper or felt and attach it to a simple paper crown. Now your little banana is ready to split!
Berry Sweet Strawberry
Red makes the perfect base for this fruity look. A simple red dress, T-shirt or hoodie works well. To create the strawberry seeds, cut small oval shapes from white paper or felt and glue or pin them across the fabric. For the leafy top, cut large spiky leaves from green felt or construction paper and attach them to a headband. Carrying a small basket adds a sweet finishing touch.
Carrot Crew
Orange sweatshirts and pants create a bright carrot body. Add vertical lines with darker orange ribbon, tape or markers to give the costume texture. For the leafy green top, cut strips of green crepe paper or tissue paper, bunch them together and attach them inside a paper party hat or onto a headband. The result is a festive costume that works well on its own or as part of a family bunch of carrots.
Super Broccoli
Start with all-green clothing. To make the fluffy top, crumple pieces of green tissue paper into balls and glue or staple them onto a wide headband or a plain baseball cap. For superhero flair, add a cape with a big “B” on the back. Your super broccoli is now ready to power up the party.
Making DIY costumes together is a wonderful way to spark creativity, spend time as a family and remind kids that fruits and vegetables are worth celebrating. These ideas are simple enough for last-minute planners, yet fun enough to stand out at any Halloween parade.
This October, grab some supplies, gather your snack-loving crew and bring your favorite fruits and veggies to life!
